HealthCOVID-19Bruneians to perform Haj, Umrah pilgrimage next year

Muslim Bruneians may finally look forward to visiting Mecca and Medina after a long absence because of the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, announced the resumption of Umrah for Bruneians during the press conference earlier today.

According to the minister, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has consented to the decision made by the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) in a meeting last Saturday.

“This will be subject to the stipulation of the Covid-19 Steering Committee’s approval of the country’s entry and exit”,  said the minister.

According to the minister, Haj would be permitted only if the Saudi Government makes an official decision and by observing the current Covid-19 situation during the Haj season.

In cooperation with other relevant agencies, the Haj Management Department will begin preliminary preparation for the commencement of the Haj season while awaiting the decision from Saudi Government.

“The number of Haj pilgrims will be determined later, in accordance with the special considerations, particularly our preparedness and competency in handling the Haj pilgrims medically or physically while in the holy land”, the minister continued.

Recently, the Saudi Government has announced that fully vaccinated foreigners aged 12 and above can now perform their Umrah, provided all health requirements have been met, and a permit is obtained.

Six travel agencies will handle Umrah and Haj package services from 1443 to 1445 Hijrah.

The appointed travel agencies include Syarikat Darussalam Holding Sdn. Bhd, Syarikat Straits Central Agencies Sdn. Bhd., Syarikat Raudah Al-Amin Sdn. Bhd., Syarikat Continental Yachting Sdn. Bhd., Syarikat Dar El-Ehsan Travel & Tours Sdn. Bhd., and Syarikat Al-Hijrah Travel & Tours Sdn. Bhd.
